So I'm an American living in the Netherlands. Had history of dry eyes around 2004- got my uppers cauterized and all was well. Fast forward to this past Feb. I got conjunctivitis and my eyes have been so dry and painful for the last 4 months. Drs here in the Netherlands have put numerous punctal plugs in my bottoms, and they pop out- i think we've done this 4 times. (The normal "permanent" mushroom topped ones definitely help when they are in). One doctor here who knows what she is doing had me start doing warm compresses, stay away from certain foods, take Omega-3, and do drops. I haven't tried Restasis since you can't get it in the Netherlands. After 3 months of this I'm still in a lot of pain, my mom flew over to help with the 3 young kids- since I'm walking around the house with one eye closed (whichever one hurts the worst at the time). I can't drive, she's doing all the grocery shopping etc. I'm waiting for goggles that I ordered to come in. Other than that I have to use some swim goggles that fog up and don't have my Rx.
This is all just really pathetic. The plugs in my lowers (and previous cautery of the top) have helped a lot but they keep popping out, then it takes forever to get another appointment to get more put in. So I just want to get them fried shut (cauterized)! But I can't find a doctor in the Netherlands who does cautery. I've called my old doctor who did the first cautery in Wash D.C., have an appointment on June 19th. Haven't bought a ticket yet...it will be hard on the family (a grandfather will have to fly over from the States to help my husband take care of the kids) but I'm tired of waiting around for warm compresses and Omega-3s etc to kick in. I'm in a lot of pain! I worry that the doc in D.C. won't want to let me have 4 puncta cauterized...can only stay max of 2 weeks there...worried about spending a lot of money to fly there and not getting help! And also worried about cautery being so permanent.
What would you do???
Thanks for listening! Ashley
