Question about white discharge from eyes

Ever since I had surgery I've had a white discharge in my eyes (which is very normal for people, regardless of whether or not they've had surgery).

However, I'm curious to know three things:
A) What is it?
B) Where is it coming from? The meibomian glands or elsewhere?
C) Why is it most noticeable first thing in the morning?
