Recurrent Corneal Erosion (b)Log

This blog that traces my steps of improvement from 2007 to 2008, when I began to suffer from Recurrent Corneal Erosions (RCE's). The blog is for new people who come to the Dry Eye Zone with this problem.

Later posts are just miscellaneous comments on maintaining Epithelial Basement Membrane Dystrophy in order to avoid RCE's.

  1. Update: Four and a half years out

    by , 30-Oct-2012 at 17:47 (Recurrent Corneal Erosion (b)Log)
I just thought I'd post an update to this blog, just in case anyone out there is living with EBMD and managing it but still feeling cautious about RCEs returning.

My last RCE was in 2008.

My current routine (until Dwelle comes back, and I hope it does!) is Muro 128 5% three times each day and TranquilEyes goggles. I'm still on a very low dose of synthroid and maintaining a healthy diet and exercising.

This condition is one of chronic pain, but it is not ...

  2. Allergy Recovery

    by , 29-Jul-2011 at 19:48 (Recurrent Corneal Erosion (b)Log)
So, my eyes have recovered from a severe allergic reaction that I had to Genteal Gel, which I love and miss, though I've been coping fine at night without it. Also, I think that something was in the air at that time that compounded my allergies. Finally, my eyes feel back to normal, and I was able to have them examined for a new prescription this week. Even better news is that Wiley can make a pair of moisture-chamber sunglasses with my prescription! I was told in the past that it was impossible, ...

  3. Spring Allergies

    by , 16-Jun-2011 at 19:06 (Recurrent Corneal Erosion (b)Log)
Well, it has been along time since my eyes have bothered me this much, though it is not nearly as bad as erosions are. Again, I've gone to three doctors. What the first one thought was an infection and treated with antibiotic drops was really an allergy. However, I needed to stop all treatments to figure out what the allergy was. So, for the first time in about four years, I went without drops and gels. I was very apprehensive about it, because I depend on osmotic drops, like Dwelle and Muro 128 ...

  4. Dr. Holly's FreshKote in the News

    by , 05-Jan-2011 at 16:58 (Recurrent Corneal Erosion (b)Log)
I was happy to see Dr. Holly's FreshKote, which is available only by prescription in the U.S. and is the same formula as Dwelle but with a lipid added, mentioned in this 4 October 2010 article "Here's a High Percentage Treatment for Recalcitrant RCE" in Review of Ophthamology 1:23:

Here is the recommended two-month treatment cocktail for recalcitrant RCE:

    * Muro 128 ointment (sodium chloride hypertonicity ophthalmic solution 5.0%, Bausch + Lomb) h.s. ...

  5. A New Treatment for Sorry Corneas

    by , 05-Sep-2010 at 15:22 (Recurrent Corneal Erosion (b)Log)
Although this treatment has been tested on LASIK patients who have had problems, it might help those of us with corneal defects, due to other reasons.

I thought I'd post this article "X-Linking Shows Promise Against Kerectasia" from the April issue (17:4) of Review of Ophthalmology:

"A method that combines saturating an abnormal cornea with riboflavin and then activating its tissue-strengthening properties with ultraviolet-A light is showing promise ...
