View Full Version : Can hot compresses or hot showers scald your eyes?
Because I have heard you could be burning your eye lids with hot compresses or taking hot showers and you wouldn't know it?

Yes, it is possible to burn your lids (and corneas). You have to be careful with the temperature. Hard to imagine it in the shower as it would be too hot to tolerate. With a microwave compress or even hot washcloth you must use common sense and ensure it is not too hot.
LOL ya like it doesn't burn until after I have used a hot compress like maybe few hrs later.

There is a serious lesson to be learnt here tho' - me being typically male :) I thought the hotter my compress and the more vigorously I massaged my lids the better the effect - not only is this not true I appear to be getting better results by using a merely warm compress for 3 mins max and not massaging the lids at all !
Sometimes less is more . . .

I was wondering this too actually. The water out of my tap is scalding when it's on the hottest and I have to wait awhile for it to cool down before putting it over my eyes. When I first started found out I have meibomitis, and started this whole eye care routine, I burnt my eyelids a few times. :( I had the same idea you did. Hot is better right? Seems it's not so right.
