View Full Version : OptoMap
How accurate is the OptoMap and when should a dilated exam be performed in addition to or instead of OptoMap imaging?

Kitty,
It never should replace a retinal exam. Maybe if you are pressed for time, an angle closure glaucoma patient, or just like looking at pictures well great but please have your eyes examined via a dilated fundus exam and if there are any concerns like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration or retinal holes/tears or detachments this should only be by a Retina Specialist.

My optometrist has replaced the annual dilated retinal exam with the OptoMap for routine screening. Are you saying this is inadequate for routine screening? Should I request a dilated exam?

It depends on your age and other health issues.
If you are perfectly healthy and have no complaints
it is probably okay but if this is not the case
nothing replaces a dilated fundus exam.
