tight eye lids

Whenever my eyes are the most dry, my eye lids seem to alot tighter than usual. Kind of hard to describe, but I can tell at times when Im putting in eye drops that they are tighter. What is the cause of this. Is this because the eye lids are inflammed?

I'm not totally sure what causes this, but I think I know the feeling (I'm having it right now :( ). When my eyes are really dry (not many tears at all) they feel very stiff and tight. It is especially noticeable when I try to open them wide. I can tell that there is little moisture in there. My eyelids also get really red when my eyes are like this, so it could be the inflammation.

This could be way off, but I think about it like dry skin...when your skin is really dry it gets all tight and sore, so if your eyelids don't have much moisture they kinda do the same thing?? I don't know, that is just how I explain it to myself sometimes.
