Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS)

Technical term for dry eye syndrome.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca means that there is inadequate tear film protection of the cornea and conjunctiva. This can be due to inadequate stimulation or production of aqueous tears, or to tear film imbalances resulting in poor wetting of the ocular surface and rapid, excessive evaporation of tears. Chronic KCS may result in poorer vision, discomfort and pain, and damange to the surface of the cornea.
