Corneal epithelium

Outermost "skin" of the cornea.

Except in the very most severe cases of dry eye where more of the corneal tissue may become compromised, the corneal epithelium is the part of the eye we dry eye patients care about most. It is disruption to the proper lubrication and adherence of tear film to the epithelium which causes dry eye symptoms. Sometimes anatomical defects in the epithelium itself (see ABMD) may also play a role.
